I’ve discovered that one of the best-known afflictions of extreme old age has an unexpected benefit.

I hope you’ll pardon my indelicacy, but we ancients need to urinate frequently — and overnight this is particularly unsettling: we suddenly wake from a deep sleep with a sense of urgency.
Often, this comes with a nightmare, like running away from something terrifying. It’s an unpleasant sensation. But when I realize it’s only a dream, a nice thought comes to mind and I say to myself as I settle back under the bedclothes. “Well, whatever bad things happen today, I can always remember that one didn’t.”
