Ever wonder about the incomplete ending of the I-710 Freeway at Alhambra’s Valley Boulevard?
By Melanie Hooks
Thanks to sponsorship by the Alhambra Historical Society & Museum, Dr. Ron Sahu will present a talk on the freeway project’s wild and convoluted history on Thursday, January 22, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Alhambra Masonic Lodge, 9 West Woodward Ave., Alhambra.
The I-710 Freeway has ended abruptly at Valley Boulevard since 1964, a condition that has had profound implications for Alhambra’s planning and development, including adverse impacts on residents’ quality of life.
Dr. Sahu’s free public presentation, titled “Not Just Another Road: The History of the 710 Freeway and Alhambra,” will explore how the freeway came to remain incomplete, the political and planning decisions behind it, and the lessons that can be drawn from this history.
The talk will also examine the current “living history” of the 710, its present status, related traffic challenges in Alhambra and surrounding areas, and what may lie ahead. Dr. Sahu will conclude with a brief look at future options and potential solutions.
