Here’s what we covered this weekend.

      Crescenta Valley Fireworks

Crescenta Valley hosts an annual firework show on the Crescenta Valley High School campus. This year, viewers of the show filled the neighboring field at La Crescenta Elementary School as construction on the high school football field is being completed. However the smaller school site did not slow down attendance. A number of food trucks, kids activities, and live music entertained guests while they waited for the show to begin. Viewers filled La Crescenta Elementary and spilled out onto Prospect Elementary to watch the works right above their heads. This event is led entirely by volunteers, with all proceeds going to the following year’s event production.

      Pasadena Farmers Market

On Tuesday, July 6th, the weekly Pasadena farmers market was bustling. The market first began in 1980 and has been serving the Pasadena area ever since. The market is tucked in between Victory Park (where baseball games were in full swing) and Pasadena High School. With sustainability in mind, marketgoers are greeted with signs recommending that they bring reusable bags. Families, friends, and solo attendees browse the wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables from small, family-owned farms. Olive oil, wine, honey, handmade nut butter, eggs, and lush plants are among some of the decadent treats. Organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, and California EBT were present as well. EBT has been a partner since the market was established and offers up to 20$ in credit toward fresh food.

      Altadena Concert in the Park

Altadena Rotary Club hosted its 27th annual concert in the park. Some attendees driving from over 50 miles away, the amphitheater was full of folks in their best summer dress. The Rotary Club thanked many of its donors and participants such as the Sherrif Reserve Group, Altadena public libraries, and the Parks and Recreation Department. Police captain Williams introduced performers, The Fat Cat Swingers, expressing that “this is one of [his] favorite events in Altadena”. As the swingers played, a crowd of dancers rushed to the front of the theater. Playing songs like “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Let the Good Times Roll” the musicians had audience members singing and dancing across the park. They also performed many songs that they wrote and produced themselves.

      San Gabriel Farmers Market

Last week’s San Gabriel farmers market was canceled with short notice, leaving the people wondering what happened. The market was launched earlier this year on April 27th, 2024. Since then, the success of the market led management to revisit the event.  City Manager Mark Lazzaretto referred to the dwindling attendance, affecting the vendors ability to make an income.  He said that they “hope to reinvigorate the market with new and better vendors and then have a grand re-opening to get the excitement going again.” This may take some time. In the meantime, Gabrielinos can visit the neighboring market in Pasadena on Tuesdays and Saturdays!
