Hundreds of choir students gathered in Pasadena for the regional choral festival America Sings, an event that combined collaborative music-making with a hands-on community service effort.

During the two-day gathering, students assembled 400 toiletry care kits containing essential hygiene items and handwritten notes of encouragement. The supplies were funded by the Pasadena Educational Foundation and donated to the Pasadena Unified School District Families in Transition program and the Eaton Fire Collaborative. The kits will support local students and families experiencing housing instability or working to recover from the impacts of the Eaton Fire.

The festival took place Feb. 27–28 at Pasadena High School, where singers from schools across the region spent the day rehearsing together, learning new music, and building connections with fellow performers. Unlike traditional choir competitions, America Sings focuses on shared learning, collaboration, and the joy of singing rather than rankings or awards.

Before rehearsals and performances, students worked side by side to prepare the care packages, combining their artistic efforts with service to the community.

Choirs from the Pasadena Unified School District were among those participating, highlighting the district’s vocal music programs and their continued engagement in regional arts opportunities.

The festival concluded with a public performance outside Pasadena City Hall, where the combined choirs performed the music they had rehearsed together.

By joining their voices with a volunteer effort benefiting fellow students and families, the young performers demonstrated how music programs can strengthen community ties while offering meaningful support beyond the stage.
