Abundant Housing LA (AHLA) invites all lovers of architecture, cities, history, and a good walk to join them on an urban hike through some of Pasadena’s iconic neighborhoods.
By News Desk
Scott Epstein, AHLA’s Policy and Research Director, will lead this tour through the last century of urban design in Pasadena, looking at both the successes and failures of the past for ways we can build a more sustainable, affordable, and equitable present in our city.
Councilmember-elect Rick Cole will share insights from a varied career in local government. Few in city politics can speak with Cole’s expertise on urban planning and Pasadena history. “Pasadena is full of history and lessons for the future,” Cole notes. “I’m looking forward to sharing the inside story of the integration of the Tournament of Roses leadership, the evolution of Old Pasadena from skid row to urban destination, and the prospects for reuniting neighborhoods by reclaiming the 65 acres of the 710 Stub.”
Organizers described the hike as follows: “The 3.5-mile hike will begin and end at Del Mar Metro Station at the edge of Old Pasadena. There, multifamily development right above the LA Metro A line is a sign of the city’s commitment to transit-oriented development. On our route, we’ll visit the bungalow courts of Marengo and discuss vanishing urban forms that could help us tackle today’s housing crisis. We’ll cross the 710 “stub” and learn about the racist legacy of freeway expansion as well as the citywide effort to right some of those wrongs. We’ll discuss Rose Parade lore while wandering the grounds of Wrigley Mansion. And we’ll get a Paseo-level look at the revitalization of Old Pasadena. Along with special guest speakers, Epstein and Cole will use the urban fabric of West Pasadena to talk through challenges and opportunities for our 21st-century city, as we look for homegrown solutions to big problems like housing affordability and climate change.” Abundant Housing Pasadena, a local chapter of AHLA, is co-hosting this event.
