Caltech has announced the election of two distinguished alumni, William Coughran (BS ’75, MS ’75) and George Kadifa (MS ’82), to its Board of Trustees. Their appointments bring the Board’s total to 45 trustees, in addition to 22 life members from the Caltech community.

Dr. William M. Coughran Jr., a renowned technologist and Silicon Valley executive, has played a central role in the evolution of large-scale computing and networking systems over a career spanning more than two decades. A former senior vice president at Google, Coughran oversaw major projects including Chrome, YouTube, and Google Maps. He currently serves as a partner at Sequoia Capital, advising and mentoring early-stage technology startups. In 2024, he was honored with Caltech’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
George Kadifa, a veteran technology investor and operating executive, is the co-founder and managing director of Sumeru Equity Partners. With over 40 years of experience, Kadifa has held leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard, Silver Lake Partners, Oracle, and IBM. His deep expertise in scaling technology enterprises has made him a key figure in the tech investment landscape.
Both Coughran and Kadifa bring a wealth of experience and insight to Caltech’s Board, further strengthening the Institute’s commitment to scientific leadership and innovation.
