      By News Desk

The South Pasadena Public Library announced the grand opening of an innovative Seed Library, made possible by the Sustainable California grant from the California State Library.

This initiative is part of the Library’s ongoing commitment to community engagement, sustainable living, and a love for gardening, as part of the 2024 Sowing South Pasadena programs. This project is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

To celebrate the launch, the Library invites the public to join the Kickoff Party on January 20, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room located at 1115 El Centro St.

      How it works

The Seed Library is a unique community resource that allows individuals to borrow various fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds. This project promotes biodiversity and encourages residents to connect with their local environment. The Library provides an opportunity for seasoned gardeners and novices alike to share their love for plants and contribute to the growth of a green and vibrant community.

The Kickoff Party will feature a Seed Swap, hosted by the South Pasadena Community Garden, where attendees can bring their favorite seeds to exchange with fellow gardeners, promoting diversity and expanding the variety of plants in the community. An all-ages craft activity will engage participants in a fun and educational experience, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and environmental awareness. Additionally, a plant swap hosted by South Pasadena Beautiful will allow attendees to bring their own plants or plant cuttings to exchange with others.

Upon request made no later than four (4) business days before the event, the City will provide a reasonable accommodation for a qualified person with a disability to have equal access to the event.  Please call (626) 403-7312 or fill out the City’s request form available at southpasadenaca.gov (PDF) and email the form to Human Resources at HR@southpasadenaca.gov.
