The Sierra Madre City Council reviewed wildfire safety at the Meadows development, heard updates on the city’s library renovation and regional renewable energy programs, and introduced a new finance director during its March 10 meeting.

During councilmember reports, officials recognized the start of the Winter Paralympic Games and praised the resilience of Paralympic athletes.

Several routine items were approved through the consent calendar with a single vote. Among them was Resolution No. 26-23, which amended the city’s fiscal year budget to allow the city to draw from the Public, Education and Government fund reserve.

During staff reports, the Sierra Madre Fire Department provided an update related to concerns previously raised about the Meadows development project. Fire officials said a March 4 site inspection found that vegetation outside temporary construction walls had been largely cleared and that the property currently complies with defensible space requirements intended to reduce wildfire risk. The department also plans to conduct monthly inspections moving forward.

Representatives from the Clean Power Alliance also delivered a presentation on regional renewable energy programs. The organization reported that more than 91 percent of Sierra Madre customers participate in the program, with more than 92 percent enrolled in the 100 percent renewable energy option.

Councilmembers also addressed progress on the Sierra Madre Public Library renovation project. Despite minor delays, officials said the project remains under budget and that the planned June 6 reopening date is still expected to be met.

The city introduced Harry Wong as Sierra Madre’s new finance director. Wong previously served as finance director for the City of Lynwood.

Later in the meeting, the council considered Resolution No. 26-24 addressing teleconferencing and policies related to disruptions of remote access services during public meetings. The discussion focused on ensuring city meetings remain accessible to the public while providing clear procedures for handling technical disruptions or misuse of remote participation systems.

The council is scheduled to meet again March 24.
