Sierra Madre Fire Department Engineer Markus Duson was honored by OneLegacy on Tuesday, April 30.

      By News Desk

OneLegacy is the nation’s largest Organ Procurement Organizations, serving the diverse Southern California region. Fire Engineer Markus Duson was the recipient of a kidney transplant in 2022.   OneLegacy works with hospitals, physicians, transplant centers and the community.

Fire Engineer Duson’s journey embodies resilience and dedication. In May 2014 Markus began his career with the Sierra Madre Fire Department, where he played a pivotal role in its transition from a volunteer to a career employee department in 2019. Rising through the ranks from Firefighter to Paramedic to Engineer, Markus’ commitment shone brightly.

Amidst his professional strides, a health challenge emerged. Despite the early stages of kidney failure, discovered during a routine physical exam, Markus remained undeterred. Placed on the UNOS transplant list, his condition required peritoneal dialysis. Yet, he persevered, continuing his duties with fortitude.

In December 2022, Markus received a life-altering gift—a kidney transplant thru Kaiser and UCLA. Enduring a challenging recovery, he found strength in the love of his wife, Corina, their three young sons—Ryland, Radley, and Rayden—his sister Chantal, and mother-in-law Mica. Supported by his Sierra Madre Fire Department family, Markus returned to be their Engineer in April 2023.

April is DONATE LIFE Month and OneLegacy selected Markus for a flag-raising honor on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at the Sierra Madre Fire Department, 242 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.
