      New Rules:

      By Thom Hawkins

Now that I am president, our common house has new rules: You can no longer play the democracy game if you don’t share. If you persist in taking more than you need, you will go to jail for a very long time.

Workers will own everything. Americans will make what they need and need less. Money will be outlawed. Everyone will be treated fairly, with compassion and good will. Gentleness and kindness shall rule, as we become a nation of generosity. No one will consider themselves better than someone else.

We will now pass the alms plate. Give like your life depends on it.

From now on we will all sit at the same table and the earth shall be lighter. Some consider this naïve. Naïve is when you keep filling the boat with water and expect it not to sink.

Finally, political speeches will be limited to ten minutes. If you can’t make your point in that time, find another job.

Thom Hawkins taught expository writing at UC Berkeley for twenty years and recently published a collection of his poems.

Democracy, you say? Sounds more like socialism. Play nicely, yes. But get what you EARN.
