      Serendipitous encounter by Mike Duffy

      Serendipitous encounter by Mike Duffy

      – 12/13/17

      Hosted by Kathabela Wilson

In difficult times we often are surprised that we come to a new point of view. This new perspective gives us a an unexpected outlook on the world. By feeling the unknown we become more powerful. Karla Decker, seven stories up saw the whole sky. What she expected to be temporary became long term. Mike Duffy travels to Canada from Seattle. His point of view is visionary. I am constantly impressed and moved by his quest for beauty. Let this poetic strength heal and inspire us in as we approach the new year.

      winter joy…a serendipitous encounter

      Ο

      winter dawn-
      not enough heat
      to melt monday tears

      put on
      my red sweater-
      four for breakfast

Mike Duffy lives in Seattle but is up in Canada now “with our lake frozen and the beautiful Winter landscape and sky. We are at 50 degrees north so the low sun makes for beautiful photography. I will endeavor to make December and January special. I am and have always been in love with Winter and will try to reflect such in my photography and poems,” he says. Read more of his haiku here.

December sun pours in through the window, teasing the potted geraniums, giving the dracaena new hope, green leaves stretch toward the warm light. Outside the window a flock of winter birds circle around from roof to roof looking for one warm enough to settle on.

      life survives as best
      it can

Karla Decker lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. She moved there in 1963 to stay one year, and was so happy she stayed. She says: Oover 25 years ago I moved into this apartment seven stories in the air while I looked for some place more permanent. I intended to stay 6 months but a wall of windows facing south has kept me glued here. Sun pours in year around. My plants love it. And there is the drama that goes on daily outside the glass. The rising and setting of the sun, flocks of birds that circle from roof top to roof top. Then there is the weather. Storms often come from the southwest and sweep over the scene. The panorama of thunder and lightening, blizzards and heavy rain that block out every thing else. Watching the trees bud out in spring, turn colors leaf by leaf in the fall. Well, you get the idea. Six month lease! Ha! And miss all this drama?”
