The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD), in partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) and Pasadena Public Libraries, has introduced a new Free Gun Lock Distribution Program.

Announced by PPHD Director Manuel Carmona, the initiative provides residents with free gun locks as a practical step to address the ongoing challenges of gun violence and unsafe firearm storage.
Addressing a Public Health Crisis
Since 2020, firearms have been the leading cause of death among children and teens under 20. Research shows that roughly one in three households stores firearms insecurely, leaving families vulnerable to accidental shootings, suicide, and cycles of violence.
“Gun owners now have a simple, preventive tool to protect their families and community,” Carmona said. “Just as parents encourage seatbelts and bike helmets, securely storing firearms is a powerful way to reduce harm.”
Why Gun Locks Matter
Unsecured firearms significantly increase the risk of homicide, assault, accidental shootings, and suicide. Gun locks are a low‑cost, high‑impact safeguard that protect both physical safety and mental health. By reducing easy access to firearms, the program aims to strengthen neighborhoods and prevent tragedies before they occur.
Where to Get Free Gun Locks
Pasadena residents can pick up free gun locks at the following locations and times:
- Pasadena Public Health Department Front Desk
1845 N. Fair Oaks Ave. Monday – Thursday | 8:00 am – 4:00 pm - Hastings Branch Library
3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd. Monday – Thursday | 10:00 am – 7:00 pm
Friday & Saturday | 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Sunday | 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm - Villa Parke Branch Library (Second Floor)
363 E. Villa St. Monday – Friday | 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
