Yara Khoury Nammour, the Typographer-in-Residence at the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography (HMCT), will deliver a talk on the evolution of Arabic typography, examining its transformation from classical calligraphy to modern design systems.

Nammour, a designer, educator, and researcher from Lebanon, is an assistant professor of graphic design at the American University of Beirut (AUB). She also leads the Arabic Type Research Unit, which focuses on practice-based research aimed at advancing the field of Arabic typography. Additionally, she co-organizes the biennial Mashq conference at AUB, an event dedicated to pushing the boundaries of Arabic type.
Throughout her four-week residency at HMCT, Nammour will delve into the visual imprint of Arabic type, conducting a detailed analysis of letter frequency. She will utilize custom software to track the occurrence of letters and their variations across a wide array of texts. This project offers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics of Arabic type and its role in modern design.
In addition to her lecture, Nammour will also engage with students at ArtCenter College of Design, participating as a guest critic in classes, further enriching the learning experience for aspiring graphic designers.
