When Yessenia Castel and her parents opened their ice cream truck in December 2022, they could never have imagined the fires that would soon engulf the town where they had set up.

Yessenia’s mother and father had long dreamed of owning this franchise, working tirelessly to make that dream a reality for the family. Unfortunately, just as the dream was realized, Yessenia’s father passed away, leaving her mother to carry on the business. To support her, Yessenia, a former case worker, and her brother, Francisco, both quit their jobs. Together, they have turned it into a true family affair.
Amid the clean-up and construction in upper Fair Oaks, business is thriving. Workers and families alike flock to the truck to enjoy the exceptional treats on the menu. Yessenia’s mother, Sofia Silva, has added her own personal touch to many of the franchise’s recipes. One of the top sellers is the “Mangonada” – a spicy and tart delight made with Chamoy syrup, fresh mango from the Silva garden, tajín, tamarind candy, and a sprinkle of chili powder. Another popular option is the “Frescas Con Crème,” featuring sweet organic strawberries and a delicate homemade cream, another of Mrs. Silva’s signature recipes.
Other favorites include the “Canasta,” which offers two scoops of ice cream in a waffle bowl with a choice of toppings, and sweet crepes filled with strawberries, bananas, and topped with Nutella. As the weather warms, the “Revuelto” – shaved ice with a scoop of ice cream at the center – is expected to become a big hit. The menu also features nachos, churros, agua fresca, and smoothies.
The family works tirelessly every day, with Mrs. Silva going above and beyond; she recently insisted on hand scrubbing the floor of the truck despite having a broken foot! She makes all the ice cream herself at home and grows much of the fruit used in the sundaes. With the help of her children, the business continues to grow strong and remains a staple of the community.
The family has also partnered with World Central Kitchen to help feed families displaced by the fires. The truck is available for catering, having served events like those at Pasadena City Hall and Pasadena Public Works. Reservations can be made by emailing Lamichoacanatruck@gmail.com.
