The Alhambra Police Department has issued a warning to the city’s residents about fraudulent parking tickets being issued by scammers. Five residents received these phony tickets during the night of July 29-30, 2024.
By News Desk
On the morning of July 30, 2024, five residents of Alhambra reported they received tickets overnight for street sweeping violations.
The residents questioned the validity of the citations because street sweeping does not normally occur during nighttime hours in residential areas. The citations instructed the “violators” to scan a QR code which leads them to a fraudulent website where they are required to pay a $53.00 fine.
Warning
The Alhambra Police Department is warning the public about this scam and asking any residents who may have received one of these citations to not scan the QR code and immediately contact the Alhambra Police Department. Any legitimate citation issued by the city of Alhambra does not include a QR code.
At this time, this is the information known by the Alhambra Police Department:
- None of the recipients of the fraudulent citations have scanned the QR code or paid the fine.
- There is no trend on the type of vehicles that are being targeted.
- The fraudulent citations were issued mainly in the southeast portion of Alhambra.
- The fraudulent citations were issued overnight on July 29 – July 30, 2024.
- At this time, Alhambra Police are unaware of this type of scam occurring in any other city.
