Neighbors Building a Better Altadena is sponsoring a series of community conversations via Zoom based on powerful documentaries on racial justice and healing within our community and ourselves.
By Joan Riback
Their second online conversation in the series will be this Sunday, Sept. 27, 3:00-4:30 pm, based upon the film 13th and will be facilitated by Pastor Kerwin Manning.
Pastor Manning’s hope is that a there will be enough diversity present to deepen and enrich the conversation. The film can be viewed on Netflix, YouTube or at a pop-up Drive-in at Grocery Outlet’s Parking Lot on Lake on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 pm. A food truck will be available for your in-car film and dining pleasure.
13th
The film, 13th, by filmmaker Ava DuVernay, illustrates how we are all the product of our individual and collective histories. Historically, African Americans have been oppressed for the economic gains of a ‘ruling class’ and continue to be oppressed by housing, health and education policies. In addition, they are subject to a pipeline to prison by a dominatingly white culture. People of color in general and particularly Black Americans are subjected to police brutality, and denied basic and equal rights. It is time to reflect and understand how our history has shaped us.
Neighbors Building a Better Altadena believe it is our shared responsibility to initiate and perpetuate conversations towards that end.
