The Shumei Arts Council celebrates its 15th anniversary by presenting this annual concert combined with Japanese traditional dancing by Madame Hisami Wakayagi and her selected disciples. Mike Penny, a local Tsugaru-shamisen artist will join this concert as well.

This event consists of two parts. The first part features selected excellent young musicians from USC Thornton School of Music. The program includes “Beethoven String Quartet No. 9 in C major, Op. 59 No. 3, and also a world premiere, “Heart Logic” by Stephen Cohn, an Emmy Award-winning composer.

12. She is currently enrolled in the prestigious Artist Diploma program at the USC’s Thornton Shool of Music as a String Foundation Scholarship recipient, under the tuteolage of Midori Goto, a world renowned violinist and distinguished professor of USC.

This program is organized by Karen Dreyfus, Director of the Chamber Music Department of USC Thornton School of Music.

In the second half of the concert, the Shumei Arts Council presents two Japanese traditional dances, Kiyomoto “Kurama-jishi” and Nagauta “Sagi-musume.” These dances will be performed by Madame Hiami Wakayagi and her disciples.

Madame Hisami Wakayagi is founder of the Seiha Wakayagi School, “Hana no Kai”. She avidly promotes Japanese dance in Japan, Europe and the United States.

Kiyomoto is one school of “Jyoruri” and became dance music for a drama in Kabuki. Kiyomoto music was developed as popular dance music during the Edo period. Nagauta developed in the Edo period as accompaniment music for Kabuki.
