Enjoy the bopping great beat of a Saturday night at Pasadena’s Caltech Beckman Auditorium, 332 S. Michigan Ave, entertained by rising stars and veteran virtuosos.

      By Melanie Hooks

The Annual Jazz Band Guest Artist Concert players deliver music by Jim McNeely, John Coltrane and Shorter on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 8:00 pm.

The Caltech Jazz Band, directed by Barb Catlin, will feature New York saxophonist Sarah Hanahan, Los Angeles saxophonist Chuck Manning, and guitarist Zachary Caplinger.

      Sarah Hanahan

Sarah Hanahan, an alto saxophonist known for her soulful and dynamic sound, is rapidly making a name for herself as one of the most exciting new voices in jazz. A graduate of both the Juilliard School and the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Hanahan skillfully blends the deep-rooted traditions of swing and bebop with a bold, fearless intensity. Her artistic vision, driven by rigorous training, has earned her widespread acclaim.

      Chuck Manning

Chuck Manning has long been a cornerstone of the Los Angeles jazz scene, contributing his distinctive sound to the city’s rich musical landscape for over three decades. An alumnus of North Texas State University and a student of the legendary Joe Henderson, Manning has enjoyed a storied career that has included tours across Europe and collaborations with jazz greats such as Bobby Bradford, Henry Franklin, and Gary Foster.

      Zachary Caplinger

Rounding out the trio of guest artists is guitarist Zachary Caplinger, who currently serves as a faculty member at California State University, Fullerton. Caplinger is an active figure in Southern California’s vibrant jazz scene, performing regularly with some of the region’s top ensembles, including The Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Bill Cunliffe, and Joe LaBarbera.

This year’s Jazz Guest Artist Concert is set to be an evening of groundbreaking performances, bringing together some of the finest jazz talent from across the nation and local Los Angeles musicians. It’s an event that will certainly not disappoint any lover of jazz.

Tickets are $5-10 and can be purchased at this link or by calling the ticket office 626-395-4652. Parking is free.
