California took an important step toward the path of legitimizing the creation and circulation of community currencies.
Governor Brown signed into law the California Alternative Currencies Act (AB 129) on June 28, 2014, repealing an outdated and vague section of the California Corporations Code, thus removing a significant legal barrier to the continued growth of the community currencies movement.
The bill was authored by Democratic Assemblyman Roger Dickinson. He was quoted by the L.A. Times saying:
In an era of evolving payment methods, from Amazon Coins to Starbucks Stars, it is impractical to ignore the growing use of cash alternatives.
