At his daily press briefing on Monday, May 4, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that some businesses may reopen starting Friday, May 8th.

Gov. Newsom said:
We are entering into the next phase this week … with modifications, we will allow retail to start operating across the spectrum. This is a very positive sign, and it has happened only for one reason: The data says it can happen.
The businesses that will be allowed to open are the following with curbside pick-up orders only): (Note: Some businesses may not be ready to open until Monday or later in the week. Check with individual businesses before making orders).
- Bookstores
- Music stores
- Toy stores
- Florists
- Sporting goods retailers
- Clothing stores and others
Businesses that will not be open include:
- Office spaces
- Restaurants
- Shopping malls
- Personal grooming businesses
- Entertainment venues
- Live concerts
Additional businesses could be identified later this week, according to Newsom:
We will allow additional movement through phase two, and that includes the prospect of restaurants with modifications opening, hospitality more broadly opening, again, with modification.
More details will be provided later this week.

Details of Stage 2 of California’s reopening will be released on Thursday, April 7, 2020. Stage 2 will allow for the return of retail, manufacturing, and other “low-risk” businesses. - Small Businesses:
Some businesses may not be ready to open in due time and may need additional time for logistical reasons. Check with the individual business before making plans.
May 6 – 4:53 pm:
Dr. Barbara Ferrer, L.A. county’s public health director, said today:
All of the businesses that will be reopening will open in a much modified way that allows for optimum physical distancing and infection control practices.
Phase 1*
- Trails (will be closely monitored for overcrowding and to make sure safety protocols are followed).
- Golf courses (their retail shops will remain closed).
- Florists (not located within shopping malls).
- Car dealerships
- Toy stores (not located within shopping malls).
- Bookstores
- Clothing
- Sporting goods
- Music stores

Unfortunately our Mayor has refused to have weekly city council meetings. So we have no idea what the plan is.
