The concert will showcase a diverse program, including works by Brahms, Schumann, Ravel, Cliff Eidelman, and Rachmaninoff, offering a rich and varied listening experience that spans different styles and eras. Presented by the Restoration Concerts Committee of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, the event will be held in the Library Community Room in South Pasadena. Tickets are available at the door for $25 or online for $26.
A Steinway Artist and frequent recitalist both in the U.S. and abroad, Thies is celebrated for his genuine artistry and sincere approach to music, often crafting programs that focus on the composer rather than on himself. The Los Angeles Times has praised him as “a pianist of unerring warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power.” Thies gained international recognition in 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, becoming the first American pianist to win a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn’s triumph in Moscow in 1958.
Known for his “thoughtful and intensely moving interpretations,” Thies enjoys a multifaceted career as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Offstage, he is in high demand for special recording projects by contemporary composers and occasionally appears on film and television soundtracks.
The Restoration Concerts Committee, a program of the non-profit Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, aims to bring world-class music to South Pasadena and surrounding communities at an affordable price. As the name suggests, net proceeds from the concerts support restorations, enhancements, and other improvements to the South Pasadena Library and Community Room.
