The largest community-run open-source and free software conference in North America is happening in Pasadena.

      By News Desk

The Southern California Linux Expo, widely recognized as SCALE, is taking place at the Pasadena Convention Center until Sunday, March 17.

SCALE is dedicated to bringing together the open-source community to share knowledge, discover new innovations, and build connections. SCALE 21x promises an extensive program featuring renowned keynote speakers, in-depth technical talks, hands-on workshops, and an expansive exhibit hall showcasing the latest in open-source technologies.

      SCALE Youth

SCALE: The Next Generation, a youth-focused tech event will return to the Pasadena Convention Center on Saturday, March 16th, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. This is an event where the free and open source community leaders of tomorrow will be able to spotlight their ideas, projects and talents! (This programming is part of the larger Southern California Linux Expo open source technology conference.)

This year’s program will include sessions on everything from digital art to building games to computer vision to robotics and mechatronics and 3D design and printing.

All sessions are presented by students in grades 6-12.

In addition to the presentations by fellow students, attendees may visit The Next Generation (TNG) Playground to get hands-on experience with Linux and open source apps, computer vision / OpenCV, AI and generative art, and 3D printing. The Los Angeles Public Library will be there with their neighborhood science kits. The Open Source Rover will be available for demonstration and Q&A. These activities are mainly geared for middle school and high school students, but there will be a couple of activities for younger kids to build projects with Snap Circuits and Turing Tumble.

      Complimentary registration

      • For school groups or clubs, registration is complimentary for both students and chaperones.
      • If students are coming with their parents, the students can register for free, but their parents need to register for a SCALE Expo pass (see below).

      What is Open-source software?
