At the historic Pasadena Playhouse, “The Sound Inside” unfolds as a heartfelt homage to the world of writers, authors, and literature.

      By Jordan Lynn

This gripping production is an intricate psychological thriller that explores the complexities of the human psyche while paying homage to the craft of writing and the allure of great literary works.

Leading the cast, Amy Brenneman delivers a powerful performance in the role of Professor Bella Lee Baird. Her portrayal deftly navigates the intricate web of psychological struggles and motivations that define her character. Anders Keith, as the socially awkward yet sharp-tongued student, Christopher Dunn, complements Brenneman’s brilliance, creating a tension that captivates the audience.

From the moment the curtain rises to the poignant moments before the curtain call, “The Sound Inside” immerses you in the evolving relationship between Bella and Christopher. Set against the backdrop of a fall term at Yale, their connection forms and deepens, raising questions about what a professor can truly impart to a student as opinionated and sharp-witted as Christopher.

Why does “The Sound Inside” deserve the label of a love letter to authors, books, and the art of writing stories? This production embodies the essence of a psychological mystery while offering a reading list that will delight philosophical and literary enthusiasts. It simultaneously celebrates the timeless beauty of great literature while candidly critiquing the contemporary culture of authors and their works. In its 90 minutes of suspense, the play delves into the heart of what makes written stories so profound and noteworthy.

Under the skillful direction of Cameron Watson, impeccable pacing and evocative atmosphere of “The Sound Inside” create an eerie and suspenseful ambiance. The set design and production elements effectively enhance the psychological aspect, leaving the audience enthralled by the clever storytelling and unexpected revelations.

I wholeheartedly recommend “The Sound Inside” to fellow theatergoers.
