On the evening of December 6, the Altadena community will come together to remember the lives lost in the tragic Eaton fire, which took 19 lives and left a lasting impact on families and residents.

      By Rena Kurlander

The Lighting Ceremony will be a poignant moment of reflection, honoring both the victims of the fire and those who continue to live with its effects. It will also serve as a powerful symbol of the community’s resilience and hope.

      Memorial Tree with Green Lights

A central element of this year’s remembrance will be the lighting of the Memorial Tree, a beautiful tribute designed to honor those we lost. The tree will be illuminated with white lights to symbolize the enduring spirit of Altadena, while 19 green lights will shine brightly, each one representing a life lost in the fire. These green lights will serve as a solemn reminder of the tragedy, yet they will also represent growth, healing, and the hope that continues to bloom within the community.

There will also be blank white banners for the community to share their thoughts and write on them. Those small messages will serve as a tribute for future generations to look back and honor the lives of the victims, preserving their memory and the collective spirit of Altadena.

“The Memorial Tree is more than just a symbol of what we’ve lost, it’s a living tribute to the strength of our community. As those 19 green lights shine brightly, they remind us not only of the lives we mourn, but of the resilience and hope that continue to grow from this tragedy. To the 19 lives lost and those we continued to lose because of the fire, we carry their memory with us in every act of care and every gesture of unity. Together, we honor their memory and the unwavering spirit of Altadena,” said Board Member, Billy Malone.

Moment of Silence and Candlelight Vigil

The evening will begin with a Moment of Silence and a Candlelight Vigil, where the community will pause to reflect on the lives lost and the ongoing impact of the Eaton fire. A special moment of silence will be observed for 1 minute and 19 seconds, one minute for the strength of the community and 19 seconds, with each second representing one of the lives taken by the fire. This quiet pause will provide an opportunity for each person to reflect, grieve, and remember the victims in their own way.

      A Musical Tribute

Following the moment of silence, the Pasadena Waldorf School Choir will perform a moving musical tribute. This performance will offer both comfort and hope, as music has a unique ability to heal and unite. As the choir’s songs fill the air, attendees are invited to raise their phone flashlights, symbolizing a collective gesture of remembrance and unity. This shared act will reflect the strength and solidarity of the Altadena community.

A Call for Messages of Hope

In addition to the lighting ceremony, community members will have the opportunity to contribute messages of hope and encouragement. At the CLTA Information Booth, attendees can write notes of remembrance, support, or wishes for healing. These messages will help nurture the emotional and spiritual recovery of the community as it continues to rebuild and find strength together. Whether it’s a note of remembrance, encouragement, or hope, your words will be an important part of the collective healing process.

      Community Resilience and Unity

The Lighting Ceremony is not only an opportunity to remember those lost in the Eaton Fire but also a chance to celebrate the resilience and strength of Altadena. The community’s ability to come together in the face of tragedy is a testament to the enduring spirit of the people here. The green lights shining from the Memorial Tree will not just honor the past, they will light the way forward, shining with hope for a future rooted in unity, healing, and love.

The Memorial Tree, with its green lights, will be a powerful symbol of remembrance, resilience, and the enduring light of hope in Altadena.
