Altadena Gears Up for 105th Annual Christmas Tree Lane Lighting Ceremony

This year’s Christmas Tree Lane holds special significance for the Altadena community, coming after the devastating Eaton Fire on January 7, 2025. For more than a century, this iconic holiday tradition has transformed the town into a sparkling winter wonderland, and 2025 marks the 105th annual lighting ceremony.

      By John Boucher

Visitors and locals alike have long marveled at the spectacle of thousands of lights illuminating the tall, historic trees that line the street. “It’s incredible to see all those lights in so many tall trees; it can transport even the most truculent of us into a bit of a wonderland,” said Jerry Friedman, a longtime volunteer.

The preparation is a labor-intensive process driven by dedicated volunteers. Each year, over 4 ½ miles of wiring and roughly 12,000 bulbs are installed along the lane. Due to sunlight damage and the natural growth of the trees, the lights must be taken down and carefully stored each year. In recent years, organizers have switched to energy-efficient LED bulbs, which are lighter and more durable, though still sensitive to UV exposure.

The teardown process is meticulous. Lights are sorted, rolled onto specially designed hand-powered machines, and stored along with ladders, poles, tables, safety gear, and even the organization’s truck. Every tree and string of lights is numbered to ensure accurate installation the following season.

When the season returns, volunteers painstakingly unroll each string, tighten sockets, replace bulbs, and test each line to ensure it shines brightly. The lights are then hoisted into the trees using ropes and pulleys—a block-by-block effort that culminates in the dazzling display for which Altadena is famous.

      Join the Celebration!

This year, the community is invited to count down together to flip the switch and light up nearly a mile of towering deodar trees for the 2025 season. The festivities include:

      • Live performances by local choirs, marching bands, and musicians
      • Special guests and community speakers
      • A visit from Santa Claus
      • Lighting of over 10,000 twinkling lights

In partnership with the Annual Lighting Ceremony, Winterfest transforms the Lane into a festive holiday marketplace, perfect for the whole family. Attendees can enjoy:

      • Artisan & craft vendors
      • Food trucks and holiday treats
      • Live music and roaming performers
      • Kids’ activities and family fun
      • Photo opportunities with Santa and seasonal backdrops
      • Community booths and local nonprofits

The Altadena community looks forward to celebrating resilience, joy, and holiday spirit as the Lane shines brighter than ever for the 105th consecutive year.
