Step Back in Time at Pasadena’s 139th Birthday Bash

Pasadena turns 139 this summer, and the city is inviting residents and history lovers alike to celebrate in true vintage style. On Sunday, June 29, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, the Pasadena Museum of History will host a free community event that brings the city’s storied past to life.

      By Katlyn Ong

The centerpiece of the celebration is the Fenyes Mansion, a remarkably preserved residence that offers a glimpse into Pasadena life in 1910. Visitors can explore the formal Entry Hall, complete with a silver tray for calling cards, and other rooms that reflect the reserved elegance of Victorian-era customs. Most of the furnishings are original to Eva Scott Fényes, an influential figure in Pasadena’s cultural history, and include commissioned artwork and decorative pieces.

A unique highlight is the Raymond Hotel Clock, prominently displayed in the Entry Hall. Originally part of the luxurious Raymond Hotel—a magnet for East Coast elites wintering in Pasadena—the clock is a striking reminder of the city’s early resort-town days. Though not original to the home, it captures the spirit of an era when Pasadena was known for its mild winters, natural beauty, and high society gatherings.

Another historical gem on the property is the Tupa, a Finnish guesthouse and sauna that was relocated from the Arthur Flemming Estate in 1949 by Consul Y.A. Paloheimo, Eva Fényes’ grandson-in-law. Now home to the Finnish Folk Art Museum, this cozy structure showcases authentic 19th-century Finnish artifacts and continues to house a working sauna. The Tupa is presented in partnership with the Los Angeles Chapter of the Finlandia Foundation.

The event offers something for everyone, whether you’re a lifelong Pasadena resident or a newcomer eager to learn about the city’s roots. It’s a rare opportunity to walk through beautifully preserved rooms, hear fascinating stories of Pasadena’s past, and connect with the local heritage in a meaningful (and fun) way.
