On Saturday, March 1, 2025, South Pasadena High School (SPHS) sent 30 students to compete in the Los Angeles-Rio Hondo College Regional Science Olympiad Tournament.

The competition, which featured 60 teams from 39 schools, showcased the impressive talents of SPHS students, with their teams securing 3rd and 4th place overall. This marks the third consecutive year that SPHS has qualified for the prestigious Southern California State Tournament, which will be held on April 12, 2025, at Caltech.
Throughout the school year, SPHS Science Olympiad participants have demonstrated unwavering dedication, competing in six invitational tournaments since September. The students have spent countless hours after school and on weekends preparing for these events, refining their skills across various science disciplines.
Science Olympiad is a global nonprofit organization committed to enhancing science education, sparking student interest in STEM fields, and recognizing excellence in science education. The success of SPHS students at the regional tournament is a testament to the effectiveness of this mission.
The hard work of the SPHS teams was reflected in their impressive individual event results:
- Air Trajectory: 6th – Lisa Zhang, Youhan Liu
- Anatomy and Physiology: 1st – Anson Fong, William Chang
- Astronomy: 2nd – Alexa Chang, Wings Zhang
- Chemistry Lab: 4th – Evan An, Gihan Van Kerkhove
- Codebusters: 5th – Christine Xu, Kai Tilley, Richard Zhang
- Disease Detectives: 5th – Alestor Law, Clare Maurer
- Experimental Design: 4th – Alexa Chang, Clare Maurer, Wings Zhang
- Forensics: 1st – Michael Lee, William Chang
- Fossils: 2nd – Qiran Liu, Solana Singer; 5th – Christine Xu, Kai Tilley
- Geologic Mapping: 1st – Elizabeth Rosenberg, Ty Yue
- Helicopter: 6th – Emi Fong, Ty Yue
- Material Science: 2nd – Lucca Huang, Michael Lee; 3rd – Sophia Liu, William Hsieh
- Microbe Mission: 2nd – Anson Fong, William Chang; 3rd – Sophia Liu, Youhan Liu
- Optics: 3rd – Qiran Liu, Solana Singer; 4th – Christine Xu, Peter Dickinson

SPHS Science Olympiad teams were guided by their coach, Science teacher Benjamin Ku, who praised the students for their hard work and commitment. With the upcoming state tournament at Caltech, the team is ready to embrace new challenges and continue their tradition of excellence.
