South Pasadena Beautiful (SPB) continues a historic spring tradition by hosting its 49th free annual Garden Tour.
This year’s free tour focuses on four sustainable gardens and will include a range of green living practices including organic gardening, landscaping with natives, creating wildlife habitat, recycling materials in the garden and more.
The tour begins at the South Pasadena Community Garden (1028 Magnolia St). Created in 2015, this garden has 39 plots for local residents. This is where SPB’s popular Plant Swap will take place where visitors are invited to bring a plant and take a plant. A large variety of plants are available, including baby tomato plants donated by Bellefontaine Nursery.
Tour
The tour will include many native plants, an excellent choice for people who are interested in conserving water and attracting wildlife. In addition to the Community Garden, which produces mostly vegetables, herbs and flowers, other gardens on the tour have dedicated space for growing food. An array of vegetables, as well as many fruit trees, will be on the tour. Besides a wide variety of citrus trees, visitors will also find apples, pomegranates, and guavas.
The self-guided tour will feature artistic gardens beginning on Magnolia Street with two gardens, and continuing north with two more gardens on Foothill Street and finishes with a spectacular garden on Fairview north of Buena Vista. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer visitors’ gardening questions.
Wine Tasting
Immediately following the tour, SPB will host an evening of wine tasting at 1108 Foothill Street. Guests will learn about biodynamic wines from local sommelier Stephanie Schaeffer and enjoy fresh artisanal pizza. The event is a fundraiser for the SPB re-landscape project of the South Pasadena Post Office and will include a silent auction with wine tastings from Mission Wines, frames from Old Focals and more.
