Soul Force to host ‘Heal Altadena’ Concert on Sept. 19
A Heal Altadena concert, featuring new world music collaborations by musicians impacted by the Eaton Fire, will take place on September 19th. The event will begin at 7:00 pm at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Ave., Montrose.
By Brian Biery
The concert will offer an evening of extraordinary multicultural music while supporting local musicians and the healing arts initiatives of the Soul Force Project.
Headliners Earthseed Band and Mayaya include collectives of musicians formed through Soul Force’s world music initiatives. Their songs blend musical influences from folk, pop, and jazz, with rhythms from South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Earthseed, in particular, draws inspiration from Altadena author Octavia Butler’s vision of building a new community from the ruins of the old, one that values cultural diversity.
The Soul Force Project has brought world music to Altadena for the past 11 years, performing at various community sites including Rhythms of the Village, Zorthian Ranch, Charles White Park, and Village Playgarden—places that have served as musical homes for Soul Force. Tragically, all of these locations were either destroyed or severely damaged in the Eaton Fire. The fire also consumed Soul Force’s office, rehearsal studio, and production space in West Altadena.
Since the fire, Soul Force has focused on supporting artists affected by the disaster. These artists and musicians are helping to heal the community through initiatives like ‘Land Healing’ (which brings ritual and music to fire-impacted properties), ‘Thru the Fire’ (an album and documentary about Altadena artists and their histories), and community events that help bring neighbors together amid our shared devastation.
The Heal Altadena concert on September 19th will celebrate the cultural diversity of Altadena while offering hope for a positive, united future.
