Over the weekend of September 26, mysterious signs appeared in high-traffic areas across South Pasadena, triggering widespread concern among residents. Locations such as Mission Street, Cawston Avenue, Marengo Avenue, Spruce Street, Fremont Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue, Garfield Park, and the South Pasadena Public Library were all targeted. The signs gave the impression that the future of the city’s trees was about to be decided.

The signs, designed to resemble the city’s official tree removal notices, stated that decisions about the trees’ fates would be made on October 1, 2025, coinciding with the second reading of the city’s amended Tree Ordinance. This led to confusion, with many residents fearing that significant tree removals were imminent.
City Responds: No Plans to Remove Trees
In response to growing concerns, the City of South Pasadena issued a statement clarifying that there is no intention to remove the trees in question. “These signs were not posted by the City and have caused confusion and concern among residents,” the statement read. “We want to clearly state: The City has no intention of removing these trees.”
The City also took the opportunity to explain the purpose behind the proposed updates to the Tree Ordinance. The amendments aim to enhance public safety and prevent potential damage to private property, offering homeowners clearer guidelines on how to manage trees on their property. This includes situations where a tree may be hazardous, diseased, pose a fire risk, or affect homeowners’ insurance policies.
A Commitment to South Pasadena’s Urban Forest
The City emphasized that it remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving and expanding the urban tree canopy, which is central to the community’s identity, beauty, and history.
“South Pasadena’s identity as the ‘City of Trees’ is a source of deep pride for our community,” the statement continued. “[We are] fully committed to preserving and enhancing our urban forest, which is central to the beauty, history, and charm that defines South Pasadena.”
Encouraging Informed Dialogue
The City also encouraged residents to engage in informed discussions about the proposed updates to the Tree Ordinance. “We appreciate the passion our residents bring to civic issues and invite all community members to stay engaged through accurate information and constructive dialogue,” the statement said.
As the second reading of the amended Tree Ordinance approaches, City officials urge residents to rely on official communications from the City to ensure they receive accurate and reliable information about the future of the City’s trees.
