The Sierra Madre City Council met Tuesday, May 27, to discuss a multitude of topics, including a Memorial Day recognition, an announcement of the 2025 Sierra Madre Public Library summer events, and updates on the 2025 Bookmark Contest.

      By Daniel Peters

On Monday, May 26, the United States observed Memorial Day in honor of all military personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty. Across the country, people recognized the important and selfless sacrifices made for the safety and security of the nation.

The holiday also hits close to home for Sierra Madre residents. In the city’s own Pioneer Cemetery, 169 veterans are buried, having served in wars ranging from the American Civil War and Spanish-American War to World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

Every year since 1924, the Sierra Madre Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3208, in collaboration with Scout Troop 373, has placed flags and crosses at the graves of all veterans buried in the cemetery. In its 101st year, this tradition continued, with both groups honoring all veterans with these meaningful symbols.

Sierra Madre Public Library Summer Events

An announcement was made during Tuesday’s council meeting regarding the Sierra Madre Public Library’s schedule of summer events. The season kicks off with the 2025 Super Summer Kickoff Event on Saturday, June 7, starting at 10:00 am. The event will feature Thor’s Reptiles and other activities to begin this year’s summer festivities.

Throughout the upcoming months, the library will host a variety of events for residents. These include three summer science workshops and a brand-new grown-up book club. Returning favorites include Sip and Shoosh, a silent book club held at RT Rogers where guests can read quietly while enjoying their preferred beverage, and Shelf Stories Book Club, where a new book genre is discussed each month. June’s genre is romance. This event takes place at the Sierra Madre Temporary Library location after hours on Thursday, June 12, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

These are just a few of the events hosted by the Sierra Madre Public Library. More activities can be found on the library’s calendar or website. Some events may require registration in advance, which can be completed through Eventbrite via the library’s website.

      2025 Bookmark Contest

During Tuesday’s meeting, the Sierra Madre City Council, alongside the Sierra Madre Public Library, recognized the winners of the 2025 Bookmark Contest. This year’s theme, “Love My Sierra Madre,” invited contestants to showcase the people, places, or things they love about the city.

The contest was open to children from kindergarten through 8th grade who either live in Sierra Madre, attend school in the city, or have a Sierra Madre Library card. Out of 207 participants, first- and second-place winners were selected from each grade level. All winning bookmarks are currently on display at the Sierra Madre Public Library, showcasing the impressive creativity of the city’s young artists.

The next Sierra Madre City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 10.
