Upcoming Rainstorm
At their meeting on March 11, 2025, the Sierra Madre City Council discussed the upcoming rainstorm and how residents should begin preparing in case of serious emergency.
Two to four inches of rain are expected over the course of the next few days with early Thursday morning being the worst. Expect two inches of rain per hour between 1:00 am to 4:00 am. Experts from the National Weather Service expect this storm to be of similar size to the one on February 13th.
The City Council recommends that all residents in Sierra Madre be prepared, in case of an evacuation order. A mandate has already been put into effect in the northern districts and the canyon. All other districts north of Grandview Avenue have been put on evacuation warning. These orders will be in effect from Wednesday, March 12, at 7:00 am to Thursday, March 13, at 6:00 pm. No street parking in affected areas. Parking on all other streets in Sierra Madre is permissible. Overnight parking restrictions are paused on all streets that are NOT in the Evacuation Warning or Evacuation Order areas.
An evacuation center has been established for all evacuated residents next to the YMCA at Sierra Vista Park. Additionally, Athens trash pick-up services will not serve the canyon during period of the evacuation orders.
Throughout the past few weeks, 500 feet of K-rails and thousands of sandbags have been distributed by the City for residents. Also, thousands of cubic yards of debris have been removed from the basins around Sierra Madre, although some material remains. Residents should be prepared for large trucks passing through Sierra Madre over the next few weeks as work continues to empty the debris basins around Sierra Madre.
Other Council Action
The Sierra Madre City Council gave World Central Kitchen a certificate of recognition for their work in feeding all those affected by the fires and floods. World Central Kitchen work is highly recognized by citizens of Sierra Madre and surrounding cities.
