The Sierra Madre City Council met on Tuesday, August 26, to discuss a variety of citywide events, the reopening of the new library, updated traffic regulations, and changes to the meeting schedule.

      By Daniel Peters

The Council reviewed several upcoming events and projects happening in Sierra Madre over the next few months. For pickleball enthusiasts, new courts are coming to Sierra Vista Park. Construction, which began on August 4 and is set to continue until mid-September, will add eight custom pickleball courts, along with court dividers, lighting, and surface improvements.

Additionally, on September 12, there will be a back-to-school movie night in Memorial Park, featuring The Minecraft Movie. Another exciting event on the calendar is the Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, scheduled for September 20 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in Memorial Park. The celebration will include live music, Latino food, craft vendors, and more.

Lastly, the annual Mount Wilson Trail Race will take place on Saturday, October 4. This year’s race will feature a modified route due to damage caused by the January “Eaton Fire,” which affected parts of the Wilson Trail. The 5K race will now start at Kerstings Court, continue through Bailey Canyon, and end at the Wilson Trail entrance.

All participants are encouraged to join, with each racer receiving a Mount Wilson Trail Race t-shirt upon completion. Registration is open until race day at www.runsignup.com, and there will also be a Kids Fun Run beforehand. All registration fees and donations will support the revitalization and restoration of the Mount Wilson Trail.

      Sierra Madre’s New Library Update

After much anticipation, the Sierra Madre Library Renovation Project, which began in late 2023, has announced official dates for its grand reopening. Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6, 2026, when the newly renovated library will open its doors to the public.

Additionally, the temporary library location will close in January 2026 to allow staff time to transition into the new facility.

      Traffic Changes

The City Council also approved several traffic changes aimed at improving safety throughout the city. First, the speed limit on East and West Highland Avenue will be reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph. Similarly, the speed limit on West Sierra Madre Boulevard will also be lowered from 30 mph to 25 mph.

Further traffic changes were discussed but postponed for future meetings to allow for more research. These proposed changes include the addition of stop signs and other traffic features at key intersections, such as East Grandview and Canon Avenue, North Sunnyside Avenue and Fairview Avenue, and South Sunnyside Avenue and Mariposa Avenue.

      Meeting Schedule Changes

The City Council also approved changes to the meeting schedule for November and December. In November, a special meeting will be held on November 18, with no other meetings scheduled for the month. In December, the Council decided to cancel the regular meeting on the fourth Tuesday and replace it with a special meeting on December 16.

The next Sierra Madre City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 9.
