The San Gabriel Valley Phoenix Poets is offering a one-of-a-kind scholarship opportunity for student poets whose lives have been directly or indirectly impacted by the Eaton Fire that occurred in January 2025.
By Melanie Hooks
This scholarship is open to middle school, high school, and college/university students, providing them with a platform to express their thoughts, experiences, and resilience through the power of poetry.
The deadline to submit work for consideration is April 1, 2026, by 11:59 pm, and students can submit their poems via the official scholarship website. Three exceptional poets will be awarded cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $700 for second place, and $300 for third place.
All submissions will also be considered for inclusion in the San Gabriel Valley Phoenix Poets Anthology, a print and digital publication that celebrates the diverse voices and creative expressions of the local community. The anthology will showcase the depth of emotion, reflection, and discovery in the wake of the Eaton Fire, as well as the ongoing strength and spirit of the San Gabriel Valley.
The anthology is a symbol of collective healing and creativity, capturing the complexity of human experiences while amplifying the voices of young poets who have been touched by the tragedy.
