In response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the Los Angeles area, the City of San Gabriel and the San Gabriel Police Department (SGPD) have issued a public statement to reassure residents of their commitment to community safety and inclusivity.

City officials acknowledged the fear and uncertainty that federal immigration actions can create, particularly among immigrant families. Emphasizing San Gabriel’s proud celebration of diversity, the statement underscored that local law enforcement does not participate in immigration enforcement efforts.
“The San Gabriel Police Department does not inquire about immigration status, does not use local jail facilities for federal immigration enforcement, and does not assist with federal immigration operations,” the city emphasized. These practices align with California state law, including the California Values Act (SB 54), which limits local involvement in federal immigration efforts.
While SGPD may respond to requests from other law enforcement agencies during critical incidents—such as when lives are at risk or a dangerous suspect is involved—the city clarified that such responses are strictly limited to protecting public safety and do not extend to immigration enforcement.
Reaffirming its commitment to building trust, the San Gabriel City Council stated that the safety and well-being of all residents, regardless of immigration status, remains a top priority. “The City of San Gabriel remains committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone who calls San Gabriel home,” the statement concluded.
