Amapola Players is presenting a reading of the Rio Grande Anthology on November 7 and November 8, 2023, at 7:00 pm at the Parson’s Nose Theater.

      By News Desk

The anthology is a gathering of voices of the dead that reside in a cemetery, in a Texas border town, on the banks of the Rio Grande River. Some voices are at peace, some are not; but all are waiting to be heard.

Playwright Josephine Nericcio comes from Laredo, Texas and is the author of the Rio Grande Anthology. To quote Josie, “My love of Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology, and my fascination with my hometown cemetery, came together one night. I imagined a voice of a dead girl, telling me her name was Elvira Cantu, and how she died. I wrote it down quickly and that was the start.”

The cast includes: Ezequiel Guerra, Stephanie Hoston, Emanuel Loarca, Carmelita Maldonado, Roberta H. Martínez, Alejandro Pantiño, Raquel Robles Marcelino, Miguel Roura, Jared Trevino, and Dolores Yañez.

Amapola Players share stories that reflect the cultural heritage and history of the Southwest, with a particular emphasis on Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley and of those who identify as having roots in the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Philippines.

The Rio Grande Anthology reading is directed by Roberta H. Martínez, a Pasadena resident, who also directed the 30 filmed monologues that can be found on YouTube.
