In a statement released today, Chu said President Donald Trump “sent a violent mob to the U.S. Capitol to overturn the results of a free and fair election simply because he couldn’t accept that he lost.” She recalled spending “eight terrifying hours barricaded inside my office” as rioters breached the Capitol, forcing lawmakers and staff into lockdown and halting the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Chu also criticized Trump’s actions in the years since the attack, accusing him of attempting to “rewrite history” by targeting law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol. She condemned his decisions to pardon individuals involved in the assault, arguing that some have since gone on to commit “more crime and violence.”
“The truth of January 6 cannot be erased,” Chu said, emphasizing that the events of that day represent a direct assault on democratic institutions. She reaffirmed her party’s position, stating that Democrats “will never stop defending our democracy against Trump’s ongoing threats, at home and abroad.”
The January 6, 2021, attack resulted in multiple deaths, injuries to more than 100 police officers, and extensive damage to the Capitol building.
