On Monday, March 18, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) hosted a town hall in her district to discuss efforts to protect Medicaid from severe cuts proposed by the current administration and congressional Republicans.

The event, which drew over 110 attendees, mostly seniors, was held at a packed venue that reached standing-room-only capacity.
Rep. Chu was joined by experts from the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County and Via Care Los Angeles, who helped outline the potential impact of the proposed cuts on the local community. Many attendees voiced deep concerns about the broader implications of the Republican proposals, including the firing of tens of thousands of federal workers without cause, granting DOGE unlimited access to the Treasury payment system (which contains private taxpayer data), and Republicans’ threats to slash Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
“Day of Action”
The town hall was part of a nationwide “Day of Action” organized by Democrats to raise awareness of proposed Medicaid cuts, which threaten the health care coverage of over 70 million Americans—including more than 14 million Californians. The Republican proposals, if enacted, would cut $880 billion from Medicaid, with much of that funding diverted to provide tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. These cuts could have devastating consequences for children, families, seniors, people with disabilities, and women, severely affecting vulnerable communities across the country.
Republicans propose largest Medicaid cuts
Rep. Chu emphasized that these cuts represent the largest reduction in Medicaid history and would be disastrous for millions of Americans. As a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, she outlined her efforts in Congress to push back against these proposals and protect the future of Medicaid.
