On Inauguration Day, Wednesday, January 20, 2021, U.S. Representative Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) applauded President Biden’s immediate action to repeal the Muslim ban on his first day in office.

The Muslim ban, which was implemented in three versions since Jan. 2017, restricted travel from Muslim-majority countries, excluding people from emigrating or traveling to the United States based solely on their nationality and resulting in thousands of family separations. Coons and Chu authored the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, which passed the House last July and would prevent another baseless, discriminatory ban from happening in the future.
“The end of the Muslim Ban marks the end of a four-year-long nightmare for my community in which open, anti-Muslim discrimination was the law of the land,” said Farhana Khera, Executive Director of Muslim Advocates.
The Closers
Also, today, Congresswoman Chu announced that she will be among the select group of House members, known as the Closers, who will shepherd the landmark Biden-Harris immigration reform legislation through the House of Representatives.
The Closers are a group of members made up of Rep. Chu and Reps. Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-07), Yvette Clarke (NY-09), and Karen Bass (CA-27). The Biden-Harris immigration proposal that they will champion also creates a path to citizenship without delay for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) individuals and Deferred Enforced Departures and an 8-year pathway for 11 million other undocumented individuals currently living in the United States; addresses the root causes of migration from Central America; and creates in-country refugee processing.
