WHAT’S NEW IN TOWN
- CaliBurger
- Culture Club 101
- America’s Got Talent!
If you live in Kuala Lumpur, Abu Dhabi or Shanghai and have a hankering for an American cheeseburger, you can go to a little joint called CaliBurger. With a product line and logo very similar to an iconic California chain, CaliBurger has been exporting their ‘fresh, not frozen’ beef, chicken and potato offerings to places few other American corporations have been willing to go. But the Santa Monica company’s not satisfied.
By Melanie Hooks
At a private launch party Tuesday night in Pasadena, the company stressed that they’re actually a technology company in the cheeseburger business. They believe their future lies in customer interaction spurred by smart tech use. In fact, they’re hoping that a collaboration with local Caltech will result in the first robots as waiters and short order cooks. Cell charging stations and auto order pads will be available quickly out of the gate.
Funwall
Already functioning is a massive 9-foot video gaming board (check video here), FunWall, that customers interact with, competing with other restaurant goers via Blitz, a companion cell phone app. The display game was a word completion puzzle with ten rounds, each under 30 seconds. It’s short attention span theater for the ravenous – and fun even for the non-millennials in the crowd. At least for one round.

Reservation for now
In fact, demand for all this tech-forward eating has created an overload of customers at the previous two North American openings in Vancouver and Seattle, so the only way to grab a seat at the Colorado Paseo* locale from opening day Friday, June 9th until Sunday, June 19th is via reservation in the CaliBurger app.

*Pasadena location opens Friday, June 9th inside The ROSE (former Gelson’s location) at 245 E. Green St., Pasadena, CA 91101.
