These accolades further establish PWP as a leader in the public power industry.
“PWP is honored to be recognized by the APPA,” said Interim General Manager David Reyes. “As a public power agency, PWP is a community-owned, non-profit organization. That means we put our community first by operating at a high level in all aspects of our business, from communications to sustainability. We take great pride in being a leader in the industry and are honored to receive recognition for our business practices.”
Each year, APPA’s Safety Awards of Excellence recognize public power utilities that prioritize workplace safety. Based on 2023–2024 data, PWP earned a Gold designation, reflecting its continued commitment to safe operations.
In addition, PWP is one of only nine agencies in California to receive the Smart Energy Provider designation. This three-year distinction highlights utilities that excel in energy efficiency, distributed generation, and environmental initiatives—all in support of safe, reliable, low-cost, and sustainable electric service.
PWP earned the designation by demonstrating best practices across four key areas:
- Smart energy program structure
- Energy efficiency and distributed energy resources
- Environmental and sustainability initiatives
- Customer experience
PWP also received the Excellence in Public Power Communications Award in the print and digital category for its “Outtawattas Color and Activity Book.” This interactive book features games and activities that help educate children about water and energy concepts, efficiency, and safety. According to APPA, the annual communications awards celebrate creative and engaging storytelling through outstanding copywriting, design, video production, and digital interactivity. PWP was one of only 23 agencies nationwide to receive this award in 2024.
These distinctions follow another significant achievement: PWP’s recent Diamond-level Reliable Public Power Provider® (RP3) designation—the highest tier awarded by APPA. This honor is reserved for the top 5% of public power utilities nationwide and recognizes excellence in reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement.
