A new Pan African Academy will be “A Joint Collaborative Effort” with the Black Student and Family Task Force Volunteers African American Parent Council (AAPC), the Pasadena Unified School District, and Equation 2 Success, Inc.

More than 300 students who are learning English earned certification as Fluent English Proficient at a ceremony held May 11, 2024, at Pasadena High School. Another 80 students have successfully completed requirements to become fully proficient. Many thanks were given to parents/caregivers who serve on English Language Advisory Committees (ELAC) at schools and on the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC).

Norma Coombs Elementary teacher Annaliese Liberto received the prestigious Golden Apple Award from Cal State Los Angeles (CSLA) last week. The award recognizes Ms. Liberto for her excellence in teaching 4th and 5th grade as well as her dedication to mentoring future teachers through the CSLA College of Education.

Pasadena Rotary will present the 33rd annual Teachers of Excellence Program on Wednesday, May 15 at the University Club in Pasadena. The Altadena Rotary Club will award scholarships to PUSD students on Thursday, May 16, at their regular meeting.

Lanisha McKenzie, who has served as interim principal of Eliot Arts Magnet since December 2023, has been selected as principal, pending approval by the Board of Education.

Outstanding PUSD athletes, Ella Lesnever and Destiny Rayburn, were honored at the Pasadena City Council meeting on Monday, May 13, 2024.

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) is offering free breakfasts and lunch for children and youth 18 years old or younger this summer through the 2024 Summer Food Program. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and PUSD’s Food and Nutrition Services Department; and operated by PUSD, the City of Pasadena, and other organizations in Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre. Children do not need to be enrolled in PUSD schools to receive a meal; no pre-registration is required. Altadena Arts Magnet, one of two Certified Demonstration Magnet Schools in California, will host its 4th Annual Art Walk on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The Art Walk at the school will feature a curated selection of artwork, performances from Altadena Arts Magnet students, professional arts partners, and special presentations from district and civic leaders. The opening ceremony will be held at Altadena Arts Magnet Elementary Campus.

On May 8, 2024, students at Altadena Arts Magnet kicked off the first Bike, Walk & Roll to School event in Altadena. Children, parents, school administrators, and community volunteers biked from the Altadena Library to school in the morning followed by a bike skills safety assembly. Over 40 people biked to school, including Altadena Town Council Representative and bike enthusiast Dorothy Wong. California Highway Patrol gave out free bike helmets and provided road safety support and training.

Madison Elementary School students and their families will get a first look at a new summer learning program that celebrates the joy, wonder, and beauty of math. The Pasadena school district is partnering with Pasadena’s Public Libraries to launch the program that includes engaging classroom activities, workbooks that families can use at home, and field trips to the Villa Parke and Jefferson branch public libraries for access to books, homework help, and other family activities.
