The Altadena Coalition has issued a statement urging the community to stay informed and take action as the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) addresses a budget deficit that could impact local schools. Among those under consideration is Eliot Arts Magnet, which may face closure for the 2027–2028 school year. While no final decision has been made, the Coalition is working to ensure families and residents are aware of the situation.

Eliot Arts Magnet has long been a cornerstone of the Altadena community, recognized for its strong arts programs and commitment to student development. The school offers a wide range of opportunities in theater, music, and visual and performing arts, helping students build confidence, creativity, and essential skills.
In its statement, the Altadena Coalition also highlighted the leadership of Principal Lanisha McKenzie, particularly in the years following the Eaton fires. Under her leadership, the school has seen increased parent participation, reduced truancy and suspensions, improved test scores, and higher promotion rates, ensuring more students continue on to PUSD high schools.
The statement also addressed ongoing district discussions about potentially combining leadership between McKinley and Eliot, with one principal serving both campuses next year. The Coalition emphasized that Eliot’s recent progress reflects the benefits of having a dedicated principal focused solely on its school community, and that maintaining this focus is important to sustaining its success.
The Altadena Coalition is encouraging community members to make their voices heard. A virtual town hall on school consolidation is scheduled for the 31st, and public comments must be submitted by the 27th.
In addition, the Coalition encouraged residents to support Eliot students by attending the school’s annual spring production. Due to the current displacement of the school community, this year’s performances will be held at Pasadena High School on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Community members are invited to attend, purchase tickets, or make donations, and to experience the creativity and dedication that define Eliot Arts Magnet.
