Mary W. Jackson STEAM Multilingual Magnet Elementary School honored the legacy of civil rights icon Ruby Bridges with its inaugural Walk of Courage Day, an event designed to inspire students through themes of bravery, justice, and community action.

Supported by a grant from the Ruby Bridges Foundation, the celebration underscored the school’s commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments.
In 1960, Ruby Bridges made history when, at just six years old, she became the first Black student to integrate an all‑white elementary school in Louisiana. Her courage in the face of adversity remains a powerful symbol of resilience and justice. Jackson Elementary’s Walk of Courage invited students to reflect on her contributions and consider how they, too, can shape their communities with kindness and courage.
Event Highlights
- Immersive Storytelling:
A walk‑through installation featured large art panels depicting pivotal moments from Bridges’ historic journey, sparking classroom discussions about empathy and the Civil Rights Movement.
- Story Readings and Literacy Engagement:
Parent volunteers and student leaders read stories about Ruby Bridges across grade levels, linking literacy development with lessons in social justice and personal courage. - Walk of Courage Chalk Art Pathway:
Students collaborated to create a colorful chalk art path symbolizing the “steps of courage” Bridges took, adding inspiring words and illustrations along the way. - Flags of Hope Art Project:
Students designed pennants with messages of bravery, justice, hope, and kindness, forming a vibrant display of collective aspirations.
