At Marengo Elementary, Mandarin dual‑immersion students led a schoolwide assembly on Friday, February 20, showcasing songs and recitals for classmates, teachers, staff, and families. Many attendees embraced the spirit of the holiday by wearing red or traditional cultural attire.
Arroyo Vista and Monterey Hills Elementary Schools hosted hands‑on activities including food tastings, crafts, games, and lively lion dance performances, giving students a chance to explore the traditions associated with the new year.
The celebration continued at the secondary level. Middle school Mandarin dual‑immersion students performed the lion dance during lunch, prepared homemade dumplings for peers and staff, and conducted bilingual interviews in Mandarin and English. At the high school, students in the Chinese language program practiced calligraphy, popped “firecrackers” made from bubble wrap, and exchanged red envelopes as part of a series of cultural projects.
Across the district, the activities were designed to deepen students’ understanding of cultural diversity while fostering a respectful and inclusive learning environment. SPUSD expressed appreciation for the staff, teachers, and PTA volunteers whose efforts made the celebrations possible.
