As the threat of a federal government shutdown looms, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) is taking proactive steps to support families who may be impacted by a potential disruption in CalFresh/EBT benefits, which could begin as early as November 1, 2025. The district is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to assisting its most vulnerable families.
By News Desk
If a shutdown occurs, it could create significant challenges for many families who rely on CalFresh benefits for food assistance.
However, PUSD has reassured the public that its school meal programs will remain unaffected. The district will continue to provide free breakfast, lunch, and supper to students enrolled in district schools and after-school programs.
Support for Families: Available Resources
In addition to its ongoing school meal programs, PUSD is offering extra resources to support students and families during this period of uncertainty:
- PUSD School Meals:
Students will still have access to breakfast and lunch at no cost, and after-school students will continue to receive supper. These meals are vital for many families who rely on them for their children’s nutrition. - BackPack Program Partnership:
PUSD is partnering with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s BackPack Program to provide participating students with a monthly backpack filled with nutritious food. The packs contain canned and dry goods, pantry staples, fresh produce, and bread. This program serves students at Madison, Longfellow, Eliot, Blair, and Washington schools. Families can enroll by contacting their school’s community advocate or assistant. For more information, parents can reach out to the Health Programs office at healthprograms@pusd.us. - Los Angeles County Resources:
The Los Angeles County Office of Education is offering a variety of resources, including food assistance, mobile food delivery services, and community support programs. Local residents can access these services through the County’s website or by contacting their respective offices. - Parks and Recreation:
The Los Angeles County Parks system is expanding access to food programs for youth, teens, and seniors. To learn more about available food services and related programs, visit the Parks and Recreation Food Programs page.
Community Collaboration to Support Families
PUSD is also working closely with community partners, nonprofits, and local leaders to ensure that families have the resources they need. The district is pooling resources and coordinating efforts with these organizations to provide continued support during any potential funding gap. As new information becomes available, PUSD will share updates with the community.
Families in need are encouraged to stay informed and reach out for assistance. PUSD will continue to monitor the situation and take every necessary step to minimize the impact on students and their families.
