News from the PUSD Board meeting and schools’ openings.
By News Desk
On Thursday, January 16, Pasadena Unified School Board Meeting, several key updates were provided regarding the ongoing recovery efforts for the district schools.
The board approved resolutions to authorize emergency repair work and proclaimed the existing emergency, allowing for continued actions to address the situation. However, a resolution related to the rebuilding of Eliot Arts was tabled until the next meeting.
Efforts to clean the schools are ongoing, with 1,500 personnel working across campuses. As part of the cleaning process, environmental testing will be conducted at each school to ensure they are safe for re-opening. The district is hopeful that schools will begin to re-open next week, with the least impacted campuses expected to open first. HVAC systems will not be used until the necessary cleaning of vents and systems is completed.
Families from Altadena Arts and Eliot Arts Magnets will need to relocate, as those schools are not ready to reopen. PUSD acknowledged that families want to keep their school populations together and will explore options to accommodate these needs.
In an effort to support the mental health of staff and students during this challenging time, additional mental health professionals will be available. PUSD will continue to communicate with families through daily updates and is referring to schools by their physical names (e.g., Noyes) rather than who is occupying the campus. All plans include Charter Schools.
