In the 1950s, long before viral videos and internet influencers, there was one very special cat who captured the hearts of an entire community. This was no ordinary pet; this was Room 8, the gray and white tabby who became an unlikely celebrity at Elysian Heights Elementary School in Los Angeles.

The story of Room 8 began in 1952, when the feline walked into Room 8 of the sixth-grade classroom and claimed it as his own, no questions asked. Over the next 16 years, the cat would become a beloved fixture of the school, adopting students and teachers alike, and ultimately gaining international fame.
Now, thanks to a new documentary, “Room 8,” and a book by local author Brenda Rees, the legacy of this unique cat is being celebrated once again. On Sunday, November 16, 2025, the Pasadena Cat Lounge at Tail Town will host a special screening of Scott Mabbutt’s documentary, followed by a Q&A with Rees. The event will also feature a discussion of her book, Room 8: A Cat in the Classroom, Photographing L.A.’s Most Famous Feline (Photo Friends, 2025).
The book showcases never-before-seen photographs by Richard Hewett, whose iconic images of Room 8 and his student companions were featured in Look Magazine in 1962. These photos, along with Hewett’s extensive archive, were acquired by the Los Angeles Public Library in 2019 and have since been preserved by Photo Friends, a non-profit that supports the library’s photograph collection. Now, thanks to this collaboration, new generations can experience the history of this remarkable cat.
For former Elysian Heights students, the screening offers a chance to reconnect with the cherished memories of studying alongside their feline mascot. Whether it was watching Room 8 wander the halls, curl up on a desk, or become part of classroom lessons, his presence became a symbol of warmth and comfort.
The screening is set for 6:30 pm on Sunday, November 16, 2025, and tickets are $10 per person. Reservations are required, as space in the cozy Pasadena location is limited. The event is open to guests of all ages (6+), and Room 8 books and merchandise will be available for purchase. Guests are reminded to refrain from wearing fragrances, as both cats and volunteers are sensitive to scents.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate Room 8’s enduring legacy surrounded by cats, in a space that honors both his story and the spirit of community,” said a spokesperson for Tail Town Cats.
So, whether you’re a cat lover, a history buff, or just someone looking for a heartwarming evening, don’t miss this special event that brings together the worlds of education, feline companionship, and nostalgia.
