Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo released a statement on social media addressing the January 7 questioning and brief detention of José Madera, described as a “beloved and respected community leader.”

According to Mayor Gordo, Madera was detained by Pasadena Police Department officers following allegations made by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who entered the city that day.
Madera was released immediately after processing, but the mayor acknowledged that the encounter unsettled many in the community who know Madera’s character and his long record of service to Pasadena.
The incident occurred at a moment of heightened public concern, as communities nationwide are reacting to the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on the same day. That shooting has sparked widespread protests and controversy over federal immigration enforcement practices.
Mayor Gordo wrote that he shares the concern felt by many residents and highlighted that Pasadena Police have pledged a full investigation into what happened. He also noted that city and community leaders came together that same day to address the situation and begin efforts to rebuild trust with affected community members.
The mayor reaffirmed the city’s policy that Pasadena Police will not coordinate with, assist, or participate in ICE operations, emphasizing that the city is committed to upholding dignity, fairness, and the belief that “every person belongs.”
“Pasadena is strongest when we stand together for dignity, fairness, and the belief that every person belongs,” Gordo wrote, adding that this standard is the work the city will continue to pursue.
