Tim McDonald, Director of Libraries and Information Services, has announced Dogtown by Katherine Applegate and Gennifer Choldenko as the 2025 selection for the Pasadena Public Library’s Young Readers Guild.
By News Desk
Chosen by young readers ages 11 to 14 who met regularly throughout 2024 at the Jefferson Branch Library, Dogtown stood out for its themes of family, friendship, belonging, adventure, and kindness—values that will guide programming throughout the year.
To celebrate, the library is launching a Barks & Blankets community service project, inviting children to create no-sew blankets and snuffle mats for animals at the Pasadena Humane Society. The initiative is led by the Youth Services team at the Jefferson Branch Library, with three events scheduled:
- Monday, May 12, at 1:00 pm – San Rafael Branch Library, 1240 Nithsdale Road
- Tuesday, May 13, at 4:00 pm – Jefferson Branch Library, 1500 E. Villa Street
- Saturday, June 7, at 11:00 am – Santa Catalina Branch Library, 999 E. Washington Boulevard
Participants will receive a signed copy of Dogtown as a thank-you gift. A display featuring a signed copy of the book, a stuffed dog in an “I Love to Read” shirt, and a pink no-sew blanket is currently on exhibit at the library.
The celebration culminates in a virtual Conversation with the Author event featuring Gennifer Choldenko, taking place Saturday, June 14, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Jefferson Branch Library. No registration is required, but seating is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
